I am Shannon Fowler. I have a PhD in clinical psychology. I try to approach therapy as a collaborative process with each person. I also try to create an environment that is safe and respectful. I have experience entreating many different types of mental health concerns like depression, anxiety, trauma, and eating disorders. I also have experience helping with behavior change around medical issues like diabetes, obesity, chronic pain, etc.
My approach
I have had many different training experience, so I try to use the approach that best fits the person and the problem. If there is every anything that seems to not be working I want the person to let me know so that we can switch strategies.
My focus
I've worked with a wide variety of clients. I typically do not work with clients younger than 15. My degree allowed for many different training experiences, so I feel comfortable with a wide variety of presenting issues that may bring someone to therapy.
My communication style
My communication style shifts to try to accommodate each person I work with. I try to create a collaborative relationship with each client.
My journey to mental healthcare
I was initially drawn towards this profession due to friends/family who had struggled with mental health. I also really wanted a job that felt as if I was making a difference in whatever small way I could.
My goals for you
I want to understand the goals the person has for their therapy experience. At times I may suggest they add something to their goals. This should be a collaborative approach.
My first session with you
During a first session I try to get to know the person, their current experiences, past experiences, and their overall goals for our work together. Depending on time limitations I may offer some brief things to work on before our next session. I also try to allow for time to answer any questions the person may have.
