My name is Amy Schierbaum, and I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) based in Illinois and working with clients statewide via telehealth. I work with adolescents and adults specializing in anxiety, depression, mood disorders, emotional and behavioral challenges, self-harm and suicidal ideation, relationship and family stressors, and drug and alcohol challenges using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) to assist my clients in reaching their goals, coping with their overwhelming emotions and leading healthy and happier lives.
My approach
I utilize a variety of approaches to treatment. I am a firm believer in meeting you where you are at, developing a solid foundation and rapport, and tailoring goals and therapy to your individual needs. I most frequently use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), but I feel strongly that together, we can determine the best approach to my supporting you along your journey. "You can't go back and change the beginning, but you can start where you are and change the ending" - C.S. Lewis.
My focus
My style and approach are the best fit for teens and adults. I have experience working with teens in school settings, providing individual and group support for students and their families with varying levels of need ranging from anxiety, depression, ADHD, trauma, relationship struggles, interpersonal difficulties, gender identity, drug and alcohol-related challenges, mood disorders, self-harm, suicidal ideation, eating disorder, emotional disorders, behavioral concerns, and learning difficulties. I also have experience working with adults over the age of 18 in drug/alcohol treatment and families/significant others of individuals in treatment. My clinical experience spans clients of varying ages (14+) and all walks of life.
My communication style
I strive to create a welcoming environment where you feel comfortable. Together, I want us to foster a relationship to help aid you in reaching your goals. My communication style lends itself to being supportive, non-judgmental, honest, and direct.
My journey to mental healthcare
My passion is helping and supporting others. I have always felt strongly about being there for others, especially those who may be experiencing a difficult time and need someone the most. Supporting and working with individuals who work hard to meet and exceed their goals inspires me!
My goals for you
My approach to goal setting is about our working together to clearly define what it is you want to accomplish and achieve in our time together. This begins with establishing rapport and a sense of trust between us. As we progress, we will monitor progress on defined goals and adjust as needed.
My first session with you
What you can expect from our first session together is us spending the majority of our time together getting to know you. Our first session is about our building an initial connection and comfortable space for you to be you. We will spend time focusing on how you have been feeling recently, with my asking you questions to help understand those feelings. Each individual is unique, and I truly want us to work together in determining what meets your needs best. Our time here is important; let's make the best of it together!
