I am Debbie James, and I am currently licensed in the state of Georgia as a Professional Counselor and Marriage and Family Therapist. I specialize in working with children, adolescents, and their families on coping with feelings of anxiety, stress, and depression. I have a background in athletics and also work with individuals struggling with anxiety and enhancing their athletic performance.
My approach
Working from a perspective of radical acceptance, I am looking forward to working with clients who are currently navigating challenging life transitions. As a former Division I athlete, I have the skills and experience to work closely with clients who are currently negotiating the stressful and unique challenges associated with high-level athletics at the high school, collegiate, or professional level. I employ a strengths-based, person-centered approach that places at its core the relationship between therapist and client. I believe that wellness is a journey, and I will work collaboratively with you and your family to build rapport, acquire skills, and navigate conflicts as they arise.
My focus
I focus on working with adolescents and young adults, primarily around issues of perfectionism, anxiety, and self-esteem.
My communication style
I believe it is important to meet every individual where they are at, so I utilize a person-centered approach to tailor every session to meet the client's unique needs. Every individual has a rich story that influences how they cope with everyday stressors, and together we will discover how and why they cope the way they do and how to improve their daily functioning.
My first session with you
Clients can expect to be heard and validated. They will leave the first session having an understanding of what has led them to seek out therapeutic support and have a clear picture of what they would like to accomplish throughout the process.
