Hi! My name is Dr. Charness and I have my PsyD in clinical psychology and my LCSW as well as my JD from law school. I began my career as a domestic violence and rape prosecutor and that led to my clinical focus on trauma, PTSD, anxiety, and depression using several different modalities for healing.
My approach
I was trained in psychodynamic theory and I always work with clients to try and understand the "why" we behave the way we do and "why" our triggers are so ingrained in our patterns. However, I also incorporate cognitive behavioral work, attachment theory, affect regulation, mindfulness, and somatic work in my treatment.
My focus
I see all clients including couples. I feel blessed to get to work clinically with patients on their journey to self-awareness and healing. I typically treat clients suffering from all types of trauma, PTSD, depression, anxiety, grief, low self-esteem, domestic violence, abuse, women's issues, and mild ideation.
My communication style
The bond between therapist and client is the most important part of healing. I am very present in the room or on Zoom with clients and it is crucial that my patients feel seen, heard, and validated at all times. I am very nurturing, empathic, and supportive of my clients and always see their strengths in our work together.
My journey to mental healthcare
I began my career as a domestic violence and rape prosecutor seeking to protect victims of sexual, physical, and emotional abuse. After several years as a prosecutor, I realized that I was more drawn to the emotional components of trauma and abuse instead of punitive justice. It was clear that I was skilled at making victims feel safe and I decided to switch careers where my clinical abilities were utilized more productively. I returned to graduate school first obtaining my MSW and then my PsyD to help patients address trauma, PTSD, anxiety, depression, and grief. I truly believe that law and mental health overlap tremendously and I write a blog for Psychology Today regarding the intersection of these two fields. I am passionate about my job and feel incredibly blessed to work with patients on their journey toward understanding themselves and feeling good about who they are no matter how severe their trauma. Our brains are plastic and very amenable to change once we process our experiences. Simply put, every individual can heal and regain hope in their lives.
My goals for you
I ask my clients what their goals are in therapy and what they are hoping to gain from the process. I regularly check in with patients to assess how they are feeling and if our work together is productive towards their growth, development, and healing.
My first session with you
I am mindful that most first sessions are difficult for all of us when we are the patient. I strive to make clients feel comfortable while also inviting them to share their feelings at a pace that feels just right for them. We are all different and the level of intimacy that individuals desire to discuss in a first session will vary. My aim is that the client always feels safe, heard, and understood even in the first session.
