My name is Deia Lawrence and I'm a Licensed Professional Counselor. My goal is to partner with clients to help them achieve the lives they desire, on their terms. I have specialized training in adoption competency and trauma-informed care.
My approach
I use a variety of methodologies in my work with clients; CBT, psychodynamic, narrative therapy, humanistic, and mindfulness.
My focus
I have the most experience working with survivors of abuse; sexual, physical, DV, as well as childhood trauma. The majority of the clients I see are seeking help for depression, anxiety, anger, or relationship challenges. I also work with clients dealing with workplace bullying and low self-esteem.
My communication style
My style is very casual. I want my clients to feel as if they are speaking with a trusted, knowledgeable friend who happens to have specialized training with the ability to be objective and honest. I am also direct and do my best to keep clients accountable for their stated goals.
My journey to mental healthcare
I didn't imagine myself as a therapist. I wanted to be a veterinarian because of my love of animals, however, I had to realize that my passion and skills weren't exactly aligned- a math and science prodigy I am not! Still, I was always the person that everyone came to for advice or to mediate conflict, and from there I decided to study the behavioral sciences. I am motivated by a desire to help people live their best lives, whatever that looks and feels like for them!
My goals for you
Goal setting can be intimidating! sometimes clients don't know how to put into words what their desired outcomes are, they just know they want to feel better. I like to ask rather than assume, and respect the client's words in formulating goals.
My first session with you
The first session with me is about getting to know one another, a chance to ask "burning questions", so to speak, and begin the process of establishing trust and rapport. The first session is probably a bit more formal than subsequent sessions, as there is a lot to learn to set the tone moving forward.
