Greetings! My name is Jennifer Brau and I am a licensed clinical social worker and substance abuse counselor in Wisconsin. I received my undergraduate degree in social work from the University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire and graduate degree in social work from the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee. I chose coursework focused on direct practice with children and families and clinical practice for mental wellness and substance use. My professional experience includes work in child welfare, treatment foster care, parenting concerns, addiction, trauma, anxiety, depression, and other adjustment or life transition concerns.
My approach
I use an eclectic approach choosing concepts from different therapeutic modalities that are best suited for each individual person and concern. I believe that building strong therapeutic relationships is the foundation for creating a safe space to do the work of therapy. I believe that therapy is a journey we partner together on.
My focus
I work with individual adults who may be seeking out therapy for a variety of reasons. Some of these include symptoms of anxiety, depression, grief, or coping with trauma or a difficult childhood history. It may also be a concern with substance use, relationships, managing anger, questioning identity, or life transitions. This is not an inclusive list of concerns I have worked with but I hope it helps to provide some ideas.
My communication style
I see each session as simply a conversation between two people. We share, discuss, explore, and hopefully laugh a bit. I am empathetic first and foremost because I need to understand what something is like before I can help. I value being genuine in every session and providing direct feedback.
