Hello, my name is Jen Thomason. I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with 7 years of clinical experience with youth and adults, and 20 years' experience working with families and children in social services. I believe in individualized, client centered care designed to create a safe space for those struggling with the challenges and complexities of life. I prioritize building trust to create a space where you feel empowered to speak your truth. I am passionate about helping people promote their overall well-being, manage emotional distress and support your journey of healing and growth.
My approach
My theoretical framework and approach include cognitive behavioral therapy; person-centered; strength-based; solution-focused therapies in combination with mindfulness, and motivational interviewing. My clinical approach is empathetic, collaborative, and goal-oriented.
My focus
I work with youth 13+ and adults who are looking to achieve growth, healing, and change in their lives. My focus areas include life transitions; ADHD; childhood and intergenerational trauma; anxiety; depression; stress; grief; and chronic pain. I also specialize in caregiver support (adoptive parent(s), and caregivers of parents, spouses, or children with special needs).
My communication style
My communication style is calm, respectful, engaging and transparent. My goal is to build trust and create a safe/brave space for you to feel heard and validated. My therapeutic environment is non-judgmental, inclusive and patient.
My journey to mental healthcare
I received my Bachelor of Social Work Degree in 2006 from the University of North Dakota. Upon graduation, I started my career in Child Welfare, which expanded my passion for social justice including poverty, addiction, mental health, trauma, neurodiversity, racism, and inequity. In 2016, I graduated with my Master of Social Work at the University of Washington, which was the start of my clinical career. My clinical experience includes mental health crisis intervention; child welfare social worker and program management; and individual mental health therapy.
My goals for you
I set goals collaboratively with my clients. I strive to utilize SMART (Specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-based) goals in my therapeutic practice. I use an honest, empathetic, and direct approach when needed to help clients meet their desired treatment goals.
My first session with you
Building rapport is an essential part of the therapeutic relationship. During the first 1-4 sessions, I will gather information on the client to establish a care plan and set goals. I am interested in getting to know the clients' personal interests, hobbies, backgrounds, lifestyles, and desires for therapy. I also take time to answer questions and share my personal clinical background and experience.
