Hi there, I'm Abebe!

I am Abebe Belete, a doctoral nurse practitioner (DNP) and psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner board-certified (PMHNP-BC) with a holistic approach to therapy, integrating evidence-based practices with empathetic listening to address the unique needs of each client. With a focus on individual therapy and medication management, I specialize in treating mood disorders such as depression, anxiety, ADHD, and trauma-related disorders, as well as providing support for individuals navigating life transitions and managing stress. I recognize each individual's uniqueness and am committed to providing personalized and compassionate care.

My approach

As a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC), I would approach the patient with a person-centered and collaborative stance to build a trusting therapeutic alliance. Employing a combination of psychoeducation and medication management when appropriate, I prioritize understanding the patient's unique experiences and tailoring treatment to their specific needs and goals. I strive to support patients in their journey toward improved mental health and overall well-being by fostering empowerment and resilience.

My focus

As a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP), I typically work with adolescents and adults who are experiencing a wide range of mental health concerns. I am most comfortable treating conditions such as depression, anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder, ADHD, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Additionally, I have experience addressing issues related to mood dysregulation, stress management, life transitions, and adjustment disorders. My goal is to provide comprehensive and compassionate care to help individuals achieve improved mental health and overall well-being.

My communication style

As a PMHNP, I cultivate a warm and empathetic environment during my sessions, aiming to foster a sense of safety and trust for my patients. I communicate with a gentle and nonjudgmental tone, actively listening to their concerns and validating their experiences. Patients often describe working with me as supportive and collaborative, where they feel heard, respected, and empowered to participate in their treatment journey. My goal is to create a therapeutic space where individuals feel comfortable expressing themselves openly and where we can work together toward their mental health goals.

My journey to mental healthcare

My journey to becoming a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) stems from a deep-seated passion for helping others navigate the complexities of mental health. Early in my career as a registered nurse, I encountered numerous individuals struggling with psychiatric disorders, often underserved and stigmatized. Witnessing their resilience and the transformative power of compassionate care ignited a desire within me to pursue advanced training in mental healthcare. What attracted me most to this field was the opportunity to provide holistic and person-centered care, addressing not just the symptoms but also the underlying factors contributing to mental distress. Building therapeutic relationships, empowering individuals to regain control over their lives, and facilitating their journey toward recovery drew me in. What drives me to do this work is the profound impact it has on the lives of my patients. Every day, I am inspired by their courage, strength, and resilience in the face of adversity. Knowing that I can make a meaningful difference in someone's life, even during their darkest moments, fuels my dedication to this profession. Ultimately, being a PMHNP allows me to merge my clinical expertise with genuine empathy, advocating for those who may feel voiceless and ensuring that everyone has access to quality mental healthcare.

My goals for you

As a PMHNP, I approach goal-setting with patients as a collaborative process, emphasizing their autonomy and preferences. Together, we explore the patient's aspirations, concerns, and values to establish meaningful and achievable goals. Using a person-centered approach, I ensure that goals are specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART). Throughout this process, I encourage open dialogue and feedback, allowing the patient to actively participate in shaping their treatment plan. By co-creating goals tailored to the individual's needs, we can enhance motivation and promote a sense of ownership over their mental health journey.

My first session with you

As a PMHNP, I will conduct a compassionate and thorough assessment during the patient's first session to understand their unique needs and experiences. We will discuss the reasons for seeking therapy, medical and psychiatric history, current symptoms, and relevant life stressors. I will also take the time to explain my approach to treatment, including the collaborative nature of our work together. Additionally, we'll discuss confidentiality, the role of medication, if applicable, and any questions or concerns the patient may have. By the end of the session, the patient can expect a clearer understanding of their presenting issues and an initial plan for moving forward with treatment.
