Hi! My name is Jennifer McArtor and I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. I'm based in Charlottesville, Virginia, and able to provide telehealth appointments to people in Virginia and Florida. I work with adults over the age of 18 and specialize in helping people through transitions and change, depression, and anxiety. and stress management. I primarily utilize Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to help clients develop and increase coping skills. I use a strengths-based approach and enjoy helping people identify what their own unique strengths are.
My approach
My approach varies based on the needs of the client. I am a generalist who primarily utilizes Cognitive Behavioral Therapy with clients; however, I will at times use techniques from other modalities as needed.
My focus
I work with adults over the age of 18. I specialize in anxiety, depression, and life transitions/changes. I strive to help people develop healthier coping skills while decreasing their symptoms. I believe we all have the power to challenge our automatic negative thoughts, to challenge anxious thoughts, and to learn to face life with positive self-regard, self-compassion, and grace.
My communication style
My communication style is warm, empathetic, relaxed, and personable. I strive to create a safe environment where people are free to be themselves.
My journey to mental healthcare
I began my career working as a social worker more than 25 years ago. I found that I enjoyed helping people and finding the strengths in people that others may not see. Seeing people succeed, seeing people smile, seeing people be able to relax, or. use the coping skills we talk about is what drives me to continue in this field.
My goals for you
My approach to goal setting is to allow the client to describe what goals they want to achieve and then work with them to develop the steps to get there, to define what they want to accomplish in our time together. The first step is building rapport and trust whether the client has been in therapy before or this is their first time in therapy.
My first session with you
The first session is an intake session. This is an opportunity for me to get to know you better, develop an understanding of your history, and how that has impacted where you are today.
