Hi there, I'm Sherry!

My name is Sherry Bowman McClanahan and I am a LPC in Virginia. I provide a unique approach to suit your individual therapeutic needs, identify your strengths, and assist you in recognizing your potential and achieving your goals.

My approach

I am client-centered and offer a compassionate, inclusive, straightforward approach. My theoretical approach is eclectic combining cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, solution-focused brief therapy, rational emotive therapy, gestalt therapy, and motivational interviewing.

My focus

I primarily work with individual adult clients who are experiencing depression, anxiety, relationship issues, and life challenges related to childhood trauma or traumatic life events. I specialize in the complex trauma faced by veterans and first responders. I am an inclusive provider and offer affirming care for all (LGBTQIA, BIPOC). I am comfortable treating an array of disorders and diagnoses including personality disorders, mood disorders, major depressive symptoms, family conflict, relationship issues, out-of-control sexual behavior, and many others.

My communication style

My communication style is warm, accepting, and affirming. I am open and direct and provide a safe and comfortable space to share your experiences, challenges, and emotions.

My journey to mental healthcare

I decided to become a licensed clinician after working for 25 years with families in a social work setting. I recognized the impact that childhood trauma and other traumatic experiences have on our own relationships and quality of life. I also recognized the unique challenges facing first responders, veterans, and members of the LGBTQIA community and developed a passion for helping others from a clinical perspective to improve their well-being and quality of life.

My goals for you

We will work together to identify your goals and how to work towards achieving them.

My first session with you

During our first session, we will get to know each other to determine if you feel comfortable working with me and if my approach is a good fit for you. We will identify your goals and discuss steps for moving forward in a manner that feels comfortable and safe for you.
