Welcome! I am Ellen Markey. I have been a Licensed Professional Counselor for many years. I have enjoyed helping people in many different roles, situations, and places. At this time in my life, I will be meeting you online. While this is a change, it is an incredible opportunity to be here for you conveniently from wherever you are. What stays the same is my job, which is to listen to your concerns so that together we can determine the best way to help you. I am very comfortable talking about life transitions, anxiety and depression, coping skills, and career changes, as a few examples. Along the way, I may offer modalities that you will learn to help yourself. Learning new ways to cope and different ways to think then feel about things can give you emotional relief, a sense of achievement, and tools to live the life you choose!
My approach
I was trained in the Rogerian approach as a primary way to start a new relationship with a client. Listening to you, what you are feeling, what you are looking for in terms of changing so you can feel better and achieve your goals in therapy. I have skills in CBT, Motivational Interviewing, and other modalities.
My focus
I work with adults with life transitions that are affecting their life in ways they want to change and feel better. Typically these transitions are not going well leading to depression, anxiety and lack of coping.
My communication style
I listen to my clients and make sure I am understanding what they are experiencing and what they want to change. I am told by clients they feel accepted and heard,
My journey to mental healthcare
I was a student in Rehabilitation being trained to help people with physical, mental or emotional challenges. While there were many special needs to learn to address for individuals in different circumstances, I soon realized that the human experience had more similarities than differences. Being able to help others was based on a meaningful connection, establishing rapport and trust and being there to support someone else in their journey.
My goals for you
By asking what they are trying to achieve, what do they need from me to get there. Most people have a goal in mind and if not I am happy to help with that.
My first session with you
An assessment to establish safety, how are they feeling and functioning, what is needed first to help stabilize them, reassure them so they can achieve their goals.
