Hi there, I'm Melissa!

Hello, I am Dr. Melissa Garrett-Moultrie. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) based in Spring, Texas, with over 20 years of experience. I work with adults, adolescents, families, and couples. I specialize in depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, relationship issues, family conflict, parenting problems, grief and loss, gender identity, sexual trauma, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. It takes courage to pursue a more fulfilling and happier life. If you are ready to take that step, I am here to support, encourage, and to empower you on that journey.

My approach

My counseling style is warm, compassionate, direct, and interactive. My approach to therapy varies based upon the needs of my client. I most frequently use Client-Centered Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). In using Client-Centered-Therapy, I believe in unconditional positive regard, which means I am empathetic and non-judgmental. In using CBT and DBT, I will be able to help you work on changing unhelpful thoughts and behaviors to produce a more fulfilling life and the importance of accepting who you are as a person but changing your behavior at the same time.

My focus

My approach and style of therapy are a good fit for clients with anxiety, borderline personality disorder, and depression. I am comfortable with working with individuals from different cultural backgrounds as well as with couples with relationship conflicts. When I work with a couple, I listen to each partner's feelings, accepting where they are in the relationship. I ask couples to agree to certain guidelines which may help them begin to feel some relief and hope. The focus of couples therapy may become improved communication skills, changing family cycles and patterns, learning to be more tolerant, and focusing on differences and forgiveness. I have guided couples through the aftermath of infidelity, and they have gone on to create the relationship they have always wanted.

My communication style

My communication style is personable, calm, and positive. I am understanding and nonjudgmental. My goal is to create an environment in which my client and I can communicate openly and honestly with each other.

My journey to mental healthcare

I decided to become a therapist after joining the military and witnessing the dynamics in military families and marriages. I love to work with clients and families. I enjoy seeing the client make progress, achieve their goals, and transform into happier person with a more meaningful life.

My goals for you

I approach goal setting with a client by getting to know them or beyond his or her symptoms and presenting problems. I am interested in knowing their end goal of therapy and what the client wants to accomplish. Goal setting should be client-centered, and it is a collaborative effort between me and the client.

My first session with you

You will be able to expect a kind and friendly individual. I will ask what brings you to counseling, as well as some additional questions to obtain background information. The first goal in counseling is to learn how to manage your feelings which may be intense, such as anger, fear, shock, depression, and anxiety. I ask you to agree to certain guidelines which may help you begin to feel some relief and hope. During the next phase, we will begin to develop a trustworthy working relationship and focus on your treatment plan goals.
