Hi There, My name is Twyla Terry-McCarrell. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) based in Dallas, Texas, and serving clients throughout Texas and Oklahoma via telehealth. In the context of a therapeutic relationship, you and I will come to understand and prioritize your concerns; set therapeutic goals; discuss treatment options; create a treatment plan to meet your specific needs; work through the treatment plan (which will often include homework to be done between sessions); and you and I will check your progress and adjust along the way. My clients typically seek out help because their life is impacted by the effects of difficult or traumatic experiences. Often, they have physical manifestations related to their condition. We identify the physical, emotional, thought, and behavioral outcomes of their condition and work to resolve those conditions.
My approach
I specialize in somatic sensing approaches to therapy and utilize Polyvagal Therapy, EMDR, and IFS to help my clients recover.
My focus
I provide services to adults who are experiencing stress, anxiety, depression, grief, and the effects of trauma to help them recover and experience a more joyful life.
My communication style
My communication style is calm, welcoming, and personable. It is important for your healing that you feel comfortable in session. Once you feel comfortable, you may freely share your concerns. I am here to listen to and provide you with therapeutic help as you work through some of the more difficult parts of your life experiences.
My journey to mental healthcare
I have always been a compassionate person who seeks the betterment of others. Listening, although it is a skill, is something that comes naturally to me. Prior to becoming a therapist, when I heard difficult stories, I would feel empathy and compassion for those involved and wanted to help in any way I could. This became a passion of mine. While working a corporate job, I sought training as a therapist. Eventually, I switched careers to have my occupation center around my passions – providing therapeutic help for those in distress.
My goals for you
My goal is to help you reach your goals. You and I will work together to identify your therapeutic goals. This starts with having a level of trust between us that will allow you to feel comfortable with sharing enough about yourself and your challenges. We will then work to identify goals that are measurable and attainable in the time we have together. We will track your progress and make any adjustments needed.
My first session with you
What you can expect from our first session together is for us to spend the majority of our time talking about how you’ve been feeling recently, and me asking questions to better understand why you’ve been feeling that way. The first couple of sessions are about us building an initial connection and helping me get a sense of where we should go from there. As everyone is different, I like to listen first before assuming I know what will work best for you.
