My name is Cherlyn Walker and I have been a Licensed Professional Counselor in Texas for 14 years. I have a doctoral degree in psychology, specializing in trauma and crisis. I also have a master's degree in counseling psychology. I have experience working with children, adolescents, and adults. My clinical specialties include mood and anxiety disorders, trauma/PTSD, school problems, behavioral problems, ADHD, learning differences, spiritual issues, career and educational counseling, and other life adjustment issues. My approach to therapy varies depending on your clinical needs, symptoms/diagnosis, and preferences. I will always use evidence-based interventions recommended for your diagnosis. However, I will always check your comfort level and adjust my style to your needs and preferences. I encourage questions. I have been married for almost 15 years. I love animals and have 4 dogs and 2 cats. I love to travel, read, and paint. I also love to study foreign languages. I studied Spanish in high school and college, and have been studying German for the past 4 years. I look forward to meeting you!
My approach
I use a variety of evidence-based interventions, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, EMDR, Cognitive Processing Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Psychodynamic, and Mindfulness, among others. I also implement expressive therapies and play therapy.
My focus
I work with various clients ranging from age 6 to older adults. I have experience with people in all phases of life, ranging from serious mental health concerns and crises to problems related to everyday life.
My communication style
I am warm and friendly, and want our time together to feel comfortable, but productive. I do my best to create a safe space that is encouraging and non-judgmental.
My journey to mental healthcare
Throughout my life, people have always seemed comfortable talking to me about difficult things and asking me for advice/guidance. Even in elementary school, friends would come to me for help because I was a good listener, didn't judge or criticize them, and kept their information private. I started school to become a physician and entered college as a pre-medicine major. As part of my undergraduate curriculum, I was required to complete two behavioral science courses and learned early that I really enjoyed psychology. Although I completed my pre-med courses, I changed my major and never looked back.
My goals for you
At our first sessions, I will ask you what life will be like when we finish therapy, and what you want to achieve. I will then help you to develop a measurable and achievable goal that we can refine as we make progress.
My first session with you
The first session will include time to build a rapport. You are welcome to ask me about myself, and I will want to take time to get to know you. I will complete a comprehensive psychosocial evaluation asking about what you want/need from therapy, your previous history of therapy, and your significant developmental, educational, and clinical history. If there is a question that makes you uncomfortable, please express that and answer to your comfort level.
