Hello, and welcome to counseling! My name is Cynthia Chi (TX LPC License #85234), and I am a board-certified licensed professional counselor who specializes in the treatment of depression and anxiety as well as the prevention of suicide. I also provide career and wellness counseling to support my clients in strengthening their identities, developing resilience, and honoring their values.
My approach
I create a unique and individualized treatment plan for each client and typically draw from a number of different approaches. These include - but are not limited to - acceptance and commitment, cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, existential, feminist, narrative, and solution-focused therapies. I also support clients in practicing mindfulness and self-compassion.
My focus
While my practice is open to all clients, I have a particular interest in working with young adults. In my previous career as a physician, I was a medical educator who taught and mentored students and resident physicians, and this experience motivated me to pursue a new career in counseling.
My communication style
I strive to create a welcoming, respectful, safe, non-judgmental, and empowering environment for my clients. I respect that they are the experts on their own lives, and I approach their concerns with empathy but also humility and genuine curiosity. Additionally, I provide psychoeducation to help them grow in self-awareness, understand themselves better, and make sense of their lives.
My journey to mental healthcare
As a pediatric hospitalist, I treated adolescent patients who were admitted to my inpatient service for psychiatric issues. While they received medications and monitoring, they did not undergo any therapy in the hospital. I was motivated to learn cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for their benefit and saw such remarkable results from CBT in their recoveries that I was inspired to pursue a full-time career in counseling and psychotherapy.
My goals for you
My clients set their own goals for treatment, and I work collaboratively with them to refine those goals and create concrete/specific objectives. We review progress toward goals at least every 3 months, but I am always open to amending and updating treatment plans whenever a client's needs change.
My first session with you
I start the first session with reviewing confidentiality and informed consent as well as setting expectations. I then give the client an opportunity to tell their story and share what brings them to counseling. At the end of the session, I provide general ideas for how to approach their treatment, request feedback from the client, and decide with them what the next step will be.
