Aloha – I’m Tanya Kort! I was born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii. I’m a Licensed Psychologist and I hold licenses in Texas and Florida. I believe that the messages we send ourselves have the power to impact behavior and trigger automatic responses. For me, therapy is often about helping individuals take back any power they have given away. When I’m not practicing therapy, I enjoy reading, auto-crossing, traveling and dancing the hula.
My approach
A strong, therapeutic relationship is paramount, so my goal is to work with each person to develop an individualized plan that focuses on using strengths and abilities to solve problems and overcome obstacles. I work on establishing rapport and goals with individuals, customizing therapeutic techniques to help develop effective coping skills and promote healthy personal growth. I use an eclectic approach including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, motivational interviewing, positive psychology, mindfulness and relaxation, and interpersonal therapy among others.
My focus
I started off teaching students with dyslexia and comorbid learning disabilities in Hawaii for 7½ years. I went on to be the Principal of the Dyslexia Association of Singapore for 2 years. After coming back to the U.S., I attended graduate school. Since graduating in the summer of 2008, I’ve worked as a school psychologist in both Florida and Texas, as well as in a private clinic, for the Florida Department of Corrections in an intensive outpatient setting, in telehealth, and nursing home facilities. My clinical experience has been eclectic and has allowed me to work with individuals from age 5 to 105 and I embrace that.
My communication style
I am compassionate, and collaborative and I listen closely to my clients. I am relationship-oriented and flexible as I seek to balance each person I work with as we move forward in this part of their journey.
