My name is Dr. Meka Allen and I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. It is my passion and mission to walk along side you as we discover and enhance your strengths and move past depression, low self-worth, trauma, anxiety, addiction, or a combination of weights holding you back.
My approach
My theoretical approaches differ depending on the needs and presentations of individuals who choose me for their care. I primarily utilize a Cognitive Behavioral (CBT) approach but also incorporate Acceptance and Commitment (ACT), Mindfulness-Based (MBCT), Trauma Focused (TF-CBT), Dialectical Behavior (DBT), Internal Family Systems (IFS) and Experiential Therapy.
My focus
Over time my practice has organically become a safe place for women of color who have a need to heal from trauma and other adverse life experiences. I also love working with all individuals who are navigating the expected and unexpected ups and downs of life.
My communication style
My communication style is energic, warm, and direct. I have been told my voice is soothing with an enjoyable cadence. I would also say my use of humor and empathy creates a welcoming environment.
My journey to mental healthcare
I originally planned to be a middle school biology teacher. During my initial classroom observations, I discovered teachers were constantly putting out social and emotional fires. I shifted to clinical social work. Over time, I have developed a deeper understanding of human behavior and or need to heal, grow, and dream. The reward I receive from being a part of another human's healing, growing, and dreaming journey continues to drive me to to this work!
My goals for you
Goal setting is vital for effective lasting change. My approach is to learn more about your aspirations and intrinsic motivation. We will then develop specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and time-bound (S.M.A.R.T.) goals.
My first session with you
During our first session, we will explore how the acorn became a tree. In other words, we may go back a little, or a lot depending on how much work you've already completed to explore what patterns we can identify. We will also have space to explore expectations, needs, and any questions you may have.
