My name is Bryce Schalk and I am a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) based in Knoxville, Tennessee and working with clients statewide via telehealth. I work with adolescents and young adults and specialize in depression, attachment disorders and family therapy, using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) to help my clients make progress toward their goals and start feeling better.
My approach
My approach to therapy varies based on the needs of each client I work with. I most frequently use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy and Psychodynamic Therapy, as these modalities help me and the client build a shared understanding of their reality and allow us to work together to chart a path forward.
My focus
I have found that my style and approach is a good fit for teens and young adults who may be dealing with challenges of life transitions, social pressures or dealing with previous trauma. This can often take the form of depression, anxiety and relationship difficulties. I work to help my clients navigate through difficult issues and to build the skills needed to help them feel better and be successful.
My communication style
My communication style is calm and understanding, with an amount of humor mixed in. I want my clients to feel comfortable talking with me about anything, and I pride myself on my ability to listen without judgment.
My journey to mental healthcare
I decided to become a therapist because I have always wanted to help people. I have always been drawn to people's stories about their lives. Therapy allows me to work with people who want to write new chapters in their life story. I enjoy seeing people become the best versions of themselves.
My goals for you
My approach to goal setting with clients is all about working together to help define what you want to accomplish in our time together. The client sets the destination, while the therapist helps navigate. This often starts with building trust and getting comfortable with one another.
My first session with you
Our first session will mostly be spent talking about how you've been feeling recently, and me asking questions to better understand some of why you may be feeling that way. The first session is about us building an initial connection and helping me get a sense of where we should go from there. Each individual is different and I like to listen first before assuming I know what will work best for you.
