Hi! My name is Dr. Lori Malkasian. I am a licensed counselor (LMFT). I am so excited to be able to support you on this journey. I primarily work with adolescents and young adults but also work with adults of all ages!
My approach
In my practice, I take an interactive approach, prioritizing open dialogue and collaboration with my clients. I utilize Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to address negative or maladaptive thoughts and beliefs. By working together, we can cultivate healthier thought patterns and coping mechanisms to promote personal growth and well- being!
My focus
I work with a wide variety of issues including anxiety, depression, stress management, relationship issues, low self esteem, coping with life transitions, managing chronic health conditions, improving communication skills, enhancing assertiveness and teaching social skills. I enjoy working with adolescents and young adults but also work with people at different places in their lives
My communication style
I utilize a collaborative approach incorporating empathy and active listening when dealing with issues. I aim to communicate concepts and strategies in a clear and concise manner that is easy to understand and implement. To me, the most important part of the therapeutic process is the relationship itself. The relationship with my clients is the basis for the change that is needed.
My journey to mental healthcare
I have wanted to be a therapist since I was a teenager. I have always known that relationships are essential to our mental health. I have strong communication skills which enable me to build trusting relationships built on empathy and compassion.
My goals for you
When setting goals with my clients I conduct a thorough assessment to understand the presenting issues, client strengths, values and goals. I engage my clients in a collaborative discussion to identify and prioritize goals. My focus is always client centered and often break down other goals into smaller more manageable steps to avoid overwhelm. I often revisit these goals to ensure we are making the expected progress and to make any revisions if necessary.
My first session with you
During our first session you can expect a warm welcome as I work to ensure that you are as comfortable as possible. I know starting therapy is often scary but it needn’t be!! I will explain confidentiality and then begin to explore some of the areas of concern that you have to ensure I fully understand your perspective. I will likely ask question about you, your habits and your lifestyle. I will explore relationships that are important to you and make sure that I answer any questions you may have!
