Hello! My name is Rhonda DiNovo, and I am a licensed independent social worker (LISW-CP) and certified alcohol and drug counselor (ADC). I am based in Columbia, South Carolina and work with clients statewide via telehealth. I work with adults and specialize in helping them develop coping strategies for stress, life transitions, anxiety, depression, trauma and addictions. I use wholistic, evidence-based approaches like Motivational Interviewing, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Narrative Therapy, and Positive Psychology. I am committed to creating a mutual, collaborative partnership with clients where they know they are heard and valued.
My approach
I use a variety of therapeutic, evidence-based, and trauma-informed approaches focused on client strengths, motivation, and solutions. I prioritize the relationship we develop and use it as a tool for healing. I am trained and experienced in theoretical practice approaches including motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioral therapy, narrative therapy, solution-focused therapy, and positive psychology.
My focus
I love to work with a diverse range of adult clients who face unique stressors and challenges in their personal and professional lives. Specifically, I have worked closely with first responders, who sometimes experience vicarious trauma and burnout due to their work and family life. I also work with individuals and families struggling with substance use and co-occurring disorders, helping them navigate the complexities of recovery. My practice also extends to addressing women’s issues, particularly issues related to career, life transitions, and aging. Additionally, I work with couples seeking to improve their communication and strengthen their relationships.
My communication style
In our sessions, I strive to set a tone where we are partners, and together we become curious to explore and anticipate the possibilities of change. I recognize the road to healing is a journey, often with ups, downs, detours, and stalls. I understand that change often occurs incrementally, and at the unique pace of the client. This is normal, and I treat it as such. I aim to be your partner in this journey, regardless of what stage of change you are in along that journey. My communication style is guiding, interactive, solution-focused, and centered on the “here and now”, which helps clients identify immediate goals and actionable steps toward positive change.
My journey to mental healthcare
I was raised by my grandparents in the mid-west rust belt. I grew up poor and I watched many of my family members and loved ones suffer from addiction. I knew from an early age I was destined for something different. I was empathetic and had a heart for the vulnerable. I wanted to learn, to grow, to see and know different types of people, families, cultures, and environments. That desire led me to The Ohio State University where I studied psychology and social work. I have been living my values and dreams as an addictions professional for 32 years and as an educator for 12 years. I LOVE the work I do. I consider myself privileged to be a part of my clients’ journeys, to witness the miracle of change, growth, and healing. It is the joy of my life.
My goals for you
When it comes to goal setting, I collaborate with clients to develop goals and objectives that are meaningful to them and are based on their values. We use SMART criteria, that is, client goals and objectives are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and resourced, and time limited. I also work with the client to stay focused on their goal achievement by helping them determine SMART ways to evaluate their motivation, ability, and progress as they work towards achieving their desired goals.
My first session with you
My goal is to create a comfortable and safe environment where clients feel heard and empowered from the very start. In our first session together, clients can expect an engaging, collaborative experience. We will begin by getting to know each other and exploring your unique needs and goals. We will assess your current situation and identify the areas you’d like to focus our work on together. We will also openly and realistically discuss mutual expectations for the therapeutic relationship and work, ensuring we establish a clear and supportive framework for your journey towards change and growth.
