Hello! My name is Esther Kamisar, Ph.D. I am a licensed Psychologist and have been practicing for over 40 years.
My approach
Since I was trained at a Psychoanalytic Institute, my basic approach encompasses Freudian theories such as understanding how early life experiences affect our present functioning. While this approach may be appropriate for some disorders, like Depression, I would select a behavioral program for the treatment of disorders like OCD which features interventions of exposure to the avoided object
My focus
I enjoy working with clients who are facing phases of life challenges throughout their adult, both younger and older years. I also enjoy working with clients who have been struggling with ADHD and are able to make dramatic changes in their lives when diagnosed and treated successfully. I am also interested in working with patients struggling with Bipolar, Depression, and Anxiety.
My communication style
Since one’s talking promotes the proliferation of neurons in the brain and thus strengthens the brain, I try to promote the patient’s doing most of the talking during our sessions.
My journey to mental healthcare
I had been quite curious about the rock-bottom workings of our thoughts and feelings, and at one point in my education, I realized that I had not yet learned any of that information. A colleague recommended the School I attended, Post-Doctorate, and I took to the assigned readings like Chocolate Cake. Now that I am working in the field, I find great gratification in my relationships with my patients.
My goals for you
Throughout the treatment, our clients are asked to complete questionnaires regarding items that may be troubling them. As we share together the information revealed in these answers, we prioritize together the issues that most need addressing
My first session with you
I would be asking the client what brought her/him to therapy. Usually, some questionnaires are involved in order to formulate a diagnosis more definitively, and I will welcome any questions they may have. We may have to set aside an additional session to complete the initial evaluation otherwise we may come to a decision about whether or not to undertake psychotherapy together.
