My journey to mental healthcare
My journey to becoming a therapist began with running therapy groups for individuals in a therapeutic community focused on addiction in Cartagena -Colombia in 1995. This experience was foundational, as it allowed me to develop skills in group dynamics and treatment perspectives. I then transitioned to working with patients with dual diagnoses in a mental health hospital in Medellin -Colombia in 1998 working with Chronic Mental Health Illness, where I gained a deeper understanding of the complexities of co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders. I was qualified for a career as a therapist because of my passion for motivating, educating, and supporting individuals struggling with mental health and addiction problems. I find fulfillment in helping clients navigate their challenges and achieve personal growth. What drives me in this work is addressing the stigmas, stereotypes, and lack of compassion often faced by those with mental health and addiction problems. I am committed to providing empathetic, effective care and advocating for a more understanding and supportive approach to these issues.
My goals for you
I use the SMART criteria for effective goal-setting, which ensures that goals are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. This structure helps clients clarify their objectives, track their progress, and stay motivated. By collaboratively defining clear and realistic goals, we can create a structured path toward achieving their desired outcomes and addressing their mental health or recovery needs effectively. My approach is to help focus your efforts and increase your chances of achieving your personal and treatment goals.
My first session with you
During the first session with me, the clients can expect a comprehensive initial mental health assessment or biopsychosocial evaluation. This process involves gathering detailed information about their symptoms, behaviors, and warning signs, as well as understanding their life history and current personal situation. The goal is to gain a thorough understanding of their wants, needs, and concerns, which will help in developing an initial treatment plan tailored to their specific situation. This session is designed to build rapport, establish trust, and set the foundation for a collaborative therapeutic relationship.
