My name is Alexa Mullings and I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) based in Long Island, New York, working with clients statewide via telehealth. I work with young adults and specialize in Anxiety Disorders, Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, and Obsessive Compulsive and Related Disorders. I use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, as well as Exposure Response and Prevention to help my clients navigate and manage their symptoms in relation to their daily lives.
My approach
My approach to therapy is based on the needs of every client I work with. However, I tend to have an eclectic approach often utilizing Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy. Having this approach allows the client and I to work together to build an understanding of themselves beyond a surface level while creating a new way forward.
My focus
I have found that my style and approach are a good fit for young adults who are struggling with irrational thoughts and behaviors in addition to stress, major changes in life, as well as the need to keep up with social standards. These issues often come in the form of anxiety, ADHD, and body-focused repetitive behaviors. I work with my clients to identify stressors, triggers, and maladaptive behaviors so we can begin to develop better coping skills and successful symptom management.
My communication style
My communication style is accommodating and personable, with a touch of boldness. I want my clients to feel comfortable enough to be open and transparent with me about everything, so I've built an environment of active listening and no judgment.
My journey to mental healthcare
I decided to become a therapist because I wanted to help people realize that they can be a better version of themselves if they want a change. I wanted people to understand that they don't have to become victims of their minds and subsequent behaviors. People were always drawn to my calm, understanding demeanor so much so that they would divulge issues they were struggling with. This allowed me to realize that I wanted to play a role in their journey to be the best person they could be.
My goals for you
My approach to goal setting with clients is a collaborative one. I want to know what you'd like to accomplish while working with you to see what else you can work on during our time together. I typically begin with building a strong rapport with trust as the foundation so you can become more comfortable each session. As our time together progresses, we'll monitor your progress to ensure we stay on track to completing your goals.
My first session with you
During our first session, you can expect that we'll spend the majority of time speaking about how you've been feeling lately. This will include exploratory questions to help me understand why you may have been feeling that way. I want to add that the first session is about building an initial connection while helping me figure out where we should begin. Every client is different, so I like to listen intently before assuming what therapeutic approach would work best for you.
