My name is Hettie Gonzales-Guillaury. I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) based in New York City providing psychotherapy services in New York state via telehealth. I work with adolescents and adults, specializing in interpersonal relationships, life transitions, identity, anxiety, and early childhood separation, using the modalities of psychodynamic therapy, interpersonal psychotherapy, attachment based therapy, and some techniques of cognitive behavioral therapy.
My approach
My approach to therapy is based primarily on your identified needs and goals for the treatment. I most frequently utilize interpersonal and psychodynamic psychotherapy combined with a cognitive behavioral approach in order to assist you in deepening your understanding of yourself and your behavior in relation to self and others.
My focus
I typically work with adolescents and adults with one or more marginalized identities, assisting them in navigating internal and external conflicts that may show up as symptoms of anxiety, depression, prolonged stress, procrastination, relationship difficulties, and other experiences of distress. These symptoms may manifest more intensely around life transitions.
My communication style
My warm and open communication style reflects my value of creating a safe and accepting environment in which exploration of difficult themes becomes possible. I often use reflective listening to help clarify thoughts and feelings in order to better understand your experiences.
My journey to mental healthcare
Growing up, I used to watch a tv show in which a therapist helped resolve common conflicts in families. I wanted to be that therapist. The therapeutic relationship is a form of being in community, and providing this experience to others is what attracted me to this field. I believe that change on an individual level may also facilitate change in the client's own community, whether it is about improved communication of needs or more openness to experience.
My goals for you
I encourage you to formulate your own goals and objectives and will ensure that these are reflected upon and discussed throughout the treatment in order to track progress. Goal setting is a collaborative process and may happen in the first session or a little later when you feel more comfortable being in therapy.
My first session with you
In the first session I will be interested to know about your past therapy experience, your mental health experience and the presenting problem that is bringing you to therapy. I may be asking questions to better understand your story and your needs.
