My name is Daphne Smith, and I am a Licensed Social Worker who has been practicing for the past 20+ years. My approach to therapy is motivational in style with a background in multiple cognitive behavioral approaches. My focus of practice is general mental health, families, PTSD, and trauma.
My approach
In my practice, I utilize cognitive behavioral approaches to assist in changing behaviors or patterns of thinking. In trauma, I use a cognitive process approach to process the trauma and decrease distressing symptoms.
My focus
I have experience working with adults, children, families, Veterans, and first responders.
My communication style
I am open and honest and believe that open communication as well as trust are the most important values for a therapeutic relationship. I do not judge others' personal beliefs or values as I believe everyone has a right to their own opinion.
My journey to mental healthcare
I began my career working with people struggling with addictions. I was an addiction therapist while I finished my education in social work. After graduation, I began working with children and families to assist in avoiding the children's removal from the home. This included children with difficulty with emotions as well as school and family life. I continued this as a general Mental Health therapist in a community-based program for 5 years. I then worked in the judicial system, again with addictions, in an alternative to incarceration program for several years before moving to the VA and beginning my work with Veterans. In working with Veterans, I have experience in general Mental Health as well as PTSD and Trauma.
My goals for you
Setting goals with clients should always be what the client's goals are.
My first session with you
Initial sessions with me involve getting to know each other, defining what to begin to work on, and what you, as the client, want to get from therapy.
