My name is Valerie Ziel; I am a licensed clinical social worker. My approach to psychotherapy is eclectic, adapting to the unique needs of each patient. I have provided psychotherapy services to a diverse population who present with anxiety, depression, body dysmorphia, codependency, relationship, work, and life transition challenges, as well as childhood abuse and women's issues.
My approach
My therapeutic approach is holistic, blending elements from different approaches such as psychodynamic, attachment-based, mindfulness, body-mind, and strength-based. I tailor treatment according to each client's needs.
My focus
I work with adult clients who present with anxiety, depression, body dysmorphia, codependency, relationship, work, and life transition challenges, as well as childhood abuse and women's issues.
My communication style
My goal as a psychotherapist is to provide an environment of acceptance, empathic understanding, and unconditional positive regard in which my client can feel free to verbalize and consider their thoughts, behaviors, and emotions and make constructive changes in their attitudes and reactions.
My journey to mental healthcare
At the age of 46, I decided to go to college. It was a journey of exploration and discovery that led me to this career. I believe it is important to have a purpose in life and to be of service. Becoming a social worker helped me find my purpose and to use my life experience and clinical skills to be of service.
My goals for you
I begin where my client is. I begin by asking what has brought the client to therapy and what they would like to accomplish.
My first session with you
The client's first session will probably involve me asking questions about what has brought the client to therapy, how the client copes with stressors of daily living, what, if any, are the symptoms they are experiencing, and are these symptoms negatively impacting their daily functioning and relationships. I will also explore their goals for therapy and expectations.
