Hello, my name is Jacob Korenstein. I am a licensed mental health counselor in NY. My approach to therapy is to make it a unique experience where we tackle challenges and mental health hurdles together. I have worked with adolescent individuals couples and families for over a decade and have worked in private practice along with a variety of social programs over the years from people with severe mental illness to families, to suicidal prevention fire fighters, and many more. Ask me about my experience anytime. I will use my experience to help you quickly and effectively overcome problems and to give you more happiness satisfaction and peace in your life.
My approach
I like to use the theoretical approach of person-centered psychotherapy. This is the approach I am working from but I use a variety of techniques from cognitive behavioral therapy, psychodynamic, positive psychology, and eclectic techniques to best help the people I work with.
My focus
My focus is on helping you to build happiness and satisfaction in your life. I typically work with people with feelings of depression and anxiety. I work with adult couples and adolescents throughout New York. In addition, I also specialize in helping people with a family member close friend, or spouse with a narcissistic personality.
My communication style
I am open and easy to talk to. I often use humor and I will make you the focus of our therapy. I will be kind and supportive and allow you to talk in a safe space. The approach I use in therapy will be warm and supportive and I will work to make you feel comfortable as we help your mental health.
My journey to mental healthcare
I didn't learn to be empathic in graduate school. I was always empathic and then went to school to be a therapist. It is a guiding light a calling to help others and I feel good when I am helping others in areas of mental health, and this led me to my career as a therapist. There are so many areas of psychology and I have learned so much I am excited to share it with others and make my client's lives better with the aim of increasing happiness. I have learned what does and does not work and I look forward to meeting having the chance to help you, and I wish you the best of luck in your search for a therapist.
My goals for you
In approaching goal setting I will talk with you in the first session and after some short assessments, I will explore some goals you would like to work on and make it the focus of the therapy to best help you in the areas that you are interested in improving.
My first session with you
In our first session, you will get to know me and I will get to know you. I will make every effort to make you feel comfortable and address your concerns for the reason you wanted to start psychotherapy. The best indication that therapy will have a positive outcome is how the rapport between therapist and client is. I understand there are many therapists out there. My recommendation is that if we have a good rapport and it is easy and comfortable to talk with then we will have the best outcome and if the rapport is low then the outcome will not be as good. So I will be looking to see how the rapport between us is and this is also something you should be focusing on when looking for a therapist.
