My name is Dr. Chad Royal and I am a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor Supervisor (LCMHCS) based in Mebane, North Carolina and work with clients statewide via telehealth. I am currently a Professor of Counseling and Chair of the Department of Counseling and Higher Education at North Carolina Central University. I work with individuals, couples, and families and specialize in depression, anxiety, grief, trauma, and partner/relationship problems.
My approach
My approach to therapy varies based on the needs of each client. I most frequently use cognitive-behavioral therapy and a client-centered approach to help clients and me build a shared understanding of the issues at hand - and allow us to work together to find a path forward.
My focus
I typically work with adults on a variety of issues. I often treat depression, anxiety, stress, grief, trauma, couple/marital conflict, infidelity, separation, life transitions, and work-related concerns. My hope is to help my clients navigate concerns in their lives and to build skills that allow them to feel better about themselves and develop a more positive outlook on life.
My communication style
I attempt to communicate in a calm, accommodating, and personable way. I want my clients to feel comfortable talking with me about anything, and I pride myself on my ability to understand and listen without judgment.
My journey to mental healthcare
I was decided on my career path by the time I was 19 years old. I've always wanted to help others and I have been drawn to hearing the stories that people have to tell. At this point, I have well over 30 years of experience in the field and have worked in a variety of mental health settings. Since 2002, I have worked as a teacher and supervisor of counselors - but my primary love is doing the counseling work itself.
My goals for you
My approach to goal setting with clients is to work together to define what you want to change or accomplish during our time together. This often starts by building trust between us and getting comfortable with what it means to be in therapy. We'll work together to set goals and track your progress.
My first session with you
What you can expect from our first session together is for us to spend the majority of our time talking about how you've been feeling recently, and me asking questions to better understand some of why you may be feeling that way. The first session is about us building an initial connection and helping me get a sense of where we should go from there. Each individual is different, and I like to listen first before assuming I know what will work best for you moving forward.
