I am April Mizell and have my License in Mental Health Counseling in North Carolina. Sometimes you just need someone to talk to that you do not know from the past. We should make a connection and talk. I usually spend the beginning sessions getting to know you and what makes you tick. Then, we can do talk therapy and help you learn coping mechanisms and assist you in your healing process. By the way, I offer Christian therapy, when requested. I do not pressure others, I accept them unconditionally.
My approach
I enjoy using Client-Centered approach to therapy and Narrative Therapy to help the client to use their own thought processes to bring about change. I also use Cognitive Behavioral and Rational-Emotive Behavioral Therapy to assist clients in counteracting negative thought processes. I do include some Dialectic Behavior Therapy to assist clients in "thinking before acting" by use of learning coping mechanisms.
My focus
I enjoy assisting clients who are having difficulty adjusting to changes in their environment; having social anxiety; various anxieties; depression; communication issues; setting boundaries; and working through the stresses of life.
My communication style
I like to use humor, but only when appropriate. I love to make someone's day and assist the client in looking at the positive, if possible. I have had a good bit of clients say that they enjoy talking with me and feel they are getting pertinent information to endorse change. I do offer Christian counseling, but only if asked; I would not push the issue with my clients.
My journey to mental healthcare
I was attracted to being a therapist by noticing that people want to come to me and discuss what is happening in their lives and I did not seem to be upset about it, but wanted to research on how I could help them. What drives me to do this work? When I see clients change and state they are not having as many negative thought processes as they had when they started.
My goals for you
When approaching goals, I want to find out what my client wants to work on in sessions, initially, and then assist my client in coming up with goals to work toward.
My first session with you
I want my clients to leave a session knowing that they have been heard and acknowledged. I also want them to have some tools to work with to help them in their journey of healing.
