Mary Freeman

A bit about me- to start, I love this work and I feel honored to be with my clients during times of struggle and hopefully, some moments of laughter. I’m not an advice-giver and I don’t have life all figured out. So, no judgment. Instead, I hope to increase awareness, self-acceptance, and self-determination. I hope to highlight choices and to collaborate with clients to understand their behaviors including the function they serve currently or in the past. I am non-judgmental, supportive, always open to feedback, and flexible.

My approach

My hope for therapy and for you is to develop an increased awareness of what is, and therefore, the ability to make thoughtful decisions that support long-term happiness. I think sometimes we all need to take a step back and clarify our goals and values, so we know where we’re going and what we want. I take the perspective that we are all doing our best, want to be happy, and find balance; but at times, we may lack the skills, support, or a combination of the two. That’s where I come in! I can teach you concrete skills to help improve your relationships, gain more stability, and reduce depression/anxiety, as well as problematic behaviors- from self-sabotage to substance abuse.

My focus

Adults ages 18-118! My treatment approach is eclectic and I take from various modalities. However, I am without a doubt -strengthened-based (building on what works) with a focus on progress, not perfection. I provide psycho-education to help individuals and those around them to understand why certain behaviors develop and (often without intention or awareness) are reinforced. Trauma-informed care is the cornerstone of my practice with skill building using DBT/CBT strategies- along with many others.

My communication style

I'm straightforward/honest/direct, but I hope I'm always validating and sensitive. I also have a propensity for colorful language and enjoy finding humor when possible.

My journey to mental healthcare

I never thought I would be a therapist. I wanted to do macro-social work but I needed a job- so I started working in community mental health. It was intense, and a learning experience, which was at times- painful. However, I also found personal satisfaction through my relationships with my patients who have taught me so much.

My goals for you

It's a collaboration. I work only with adults because I value self-determination and I'm happy to meet you wherever you are at. I want to support you in reaching YOUR goals, not mine or anyone else's for that matter.
