I am Melissa Painter, a Licensed Professional Counselor in Mississippi. I believe that life is about relationships, so my goal is to help clients strengthen their relationships with self and others. I endeavor to help clients live more fulfilling lives by empowering them with resources to deal with anxiety, depression, marriage/relationship issues, grief, and other life issues.
My approach
I base my approach on the needs of each client. I most often use a combination of cognitive behavioral therapy and solution-focused therapy. I can also do Christian faith-based therapy. Please let me know if that is something you are interested in.
My focus
I have worked in the past with a predominantly geriatric population, helping them cope with anxiety, depression, grief, and other life issues. I also have experience working with couples and women. I am certified in Prepare/Enrich Premarital and Marital Counseling.
My communication style
I try to listen to my clients more than I talk. I strive to be honest and direct, as well as calm and compassionate. I want my clients to feel comfortable talking to me and trust that their privacy is a top priority.
My journey to mental healthcare
I have always been interested in people and what makes them who they are. My husband is a pastor and, while ministering beside him and seeing people's needs, I realized the need for professional counseling. I decided to pursue my MA in Marriage and Family Counseling at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary to gain the skills to help others lead happier and more fulfilling lives. I love what I do because I love people and want to see them loving themselves and their lives.
My goals for you
I believe that the patient must have great input in setting goals. I lead clients in identifying what they want to accomplish through therapy and setting realistic, measurable goals.
My first session with you
In our first session, my goal is to get to know you and the struggles that led you to seek therapy. I will ask a number of questions to help determine where you are and the direction we need to go. I also want to be sure you are comfortable with me and my approach to therapy.
