My name is Dr. Vivian J. McCollum. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor. I have worked with individuals with a wide range of presenting issues including depression, anxiety, poor self-esteem, relationship issues and communication issues.
My approach
I practice from a convenience model that includes client-centered, cognitive and behavioral therapies.
My focus
I have particular experience working with couples and individuals helping them to solve communication and intimacy issues. For the past five years I have added older adults to my caseload helping them to use positive life skills to enrich their lives
My communication style
I work with my clients and present them with questions and scenarios to help them to be active participants in their own therapy. I am warm and nurturing with a no-nonsense approach to helping clients to heal.
My journey to mental healthcare
I have four years of experience as a school counselor and director of counseling for a school district in the mid-west. I started a private practice in 1998 and currently work with children, adolescents and their families. I have ten years of experience as a college professor of counseling at several tier one universities.
My goals for you
In the initial session, I ask my clients to help set therapy goals by determining what they feel is their priority.
My first session with you
During the first session, I have the clients to indicate to me what their presenting issue is. I also ask them to do a historical timeline to determine important events in their lives that influenced their thoughts and behaviors.
