I also provide clinical supervision for professional counseling. My areas of specialty are: Trauma, Anxiety Disorders, Depression, Eating Disorders, Addictions, Health Coaching, Nutrition Counseling, Geriatric Counseling, Marriage & Family Counseling
My approach
I mainly have a person-centered approach to therapy, and I also lean towards using narrative therapy as well as existential theoretical approaches. I am dedicated to helping individuals improve their mental health and wellness. I use a holistic approach to guide my clients to more balanced living. I use cognitive-behavioral interventions often when helping people improve self-esteem or make behavior changes. My work experience has provided me an opportunity to work with all types of people from adolescents to the elderly, immigrants & refugees who have survived torture & war trauma, and those with comorbid conditions (chronic health conditions and mental illness). I also have experience working with foreign born/multi-culture, diverse ethnic, and LGBTQ+ populations. I enjoy helping people learn more about themselves, how to better manage stress and conflict, and reach personal goals.
My focus
I typically work with clients who are seeking help with making changes and getting "unstuck" or going through a significant transition. I like to help people find patterns that make it difficult for them to function or feel good about themselves as they go through daily life - maybe struggling to maintain healthy relationships, find their purpose, or feel confident in their abilities. Working through past traumas or other issues can help people make connections and increase self-awareness so they can feel like they can be more authentic and more present in their current situations.
My communication style
My clients enjoy a judgement-free, safe space to share and discuss what is on their mind. I pay attention to the relationship we form and stay unbiased, so it feels comfortable to open up and dig deep as we navigate the conflicts and inner struggles that bring them to therapy. When I work with a client, I try to be 100% fully present, and I like to encourage them to think of our session as their self-care hour.
My journey to mental healthcare
I studied psychology because I have always been fascinated by human behavior and how the brain works. I also love studying both eastern and western philosophy, which helped me understand the mind-body connection. In my trauma work, I have enjoyed learning how our nervous system tries to protect us and ways we can help regulate and support these internal protection mechanisms. I became a therapist after working in the school system for a while. I found that I enjoyed speaking with students one on one very much and when I did, they opened up to me and often asked me for help. I have found that helping people brings me joy and is my life's purpose.
My goals for you
Goal setting is a collaborative process. Clients will come to the first session with some idea of what they would like to accomplish, and we will review that, prioritize the goals to work on first and we can create a plan with some objectives. We can always add new goals to the list later as goals are reached or modify goals as needed along the way.
My first session with you
I call the first session with clients the "getting to know each other" session. We will do introductions and then discuss what brings them to therapy. We will talk over the potential personal goals they feel are the most important and we may talk about dreams and beliefs.
