My name is Jessica Olson and I am a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW) based in the Twin Cities, Minnesota. I work primarily with adults and couples, specializing in depression, anxiety, trauma, life transitions, parenting, and self-esteem. Rapport, being authentic, and supporting clients' strengths are important to me.
My approach
My therapeutic approach is eclectic, as not one approach fits all and I strive to adapt to my clients and make treatment feel personal. Some approaches I use include: Attachment Theory, Family Systems, Culturally Sensitive, Decolonizing framework, Anti-Racist and Anti-Oppressive, Feminist, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Narrative, Trauma Focused, and Psychodynamic.
My focus
I have found my style and approach is a good fit for adults, parents and couples, who may be dealing with life transitions, stressors, past traumas, racial trauma, depression and anxiety. I work with my clients to navigate through these challenges in ways that will work for them, in a supportive and non-judgmental way.
My communication style
People often say they feel calm and peaceful around me, and I am intentional about bringing this energy into therapy sessions. I invite clients to truly come as they are, as I am very laid back and open-minded. My communication style is "go with the flow" with some curious questions.
My journey to mental healthcare
Prior to being an outpatient therapist, I had done more "traditional social work", working with families in their homes doing crisis work, as well as working to keep families together and out of child protection. I have always loved working with individuals, couples and families, mostly to assist in breaking down barriers and systems and social justice. Now, as an outpatient therapist, I love being able to support people in their goals and celebrate their progress.
My goals for you
My approach to goal setting is understanding what you would like to achieve during therapy sessions and working together make that happen. Over a period of time, I love doing "progress sessions" with my clients and just focusing on all the progress they have made during our time together. It is a great time to reflect and discuss strengths and new goals.
My first session with you
The first session we will spend some time getting to know one another, and you are free to ask me questions as well. I will ask about how you have been feeling recently, what is bringing you into therapy, and some questions about your history and family. I will be doing some writing to complete a document. We may not get through all the questions, and if not we can finish the next time. I do my best to make the first session as comfortable as possible, knowing that you may be feeling anxious or nervous.
