My name is Lisa K. Smith and I am a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC) based in Frederick, Maryland, and see clients statewide via telehealth. I work with adults across the lifespan and specialize in trauma, anxiety, life transitions, relationship problems and general distress that can't be pinpointed to one specific thing. All to help my clients to understand themselves, make positive shifts and feel clear about their paths moving forward in life.
My approach
My approach to therapy is dependent upon the needs and right fit for each client. I most frequently use Internal Family Systems (IFS), EMDR, and Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), combined with mindfulness and body-based interventions and resourcing. These approaches help clients better understand their inner world and through that understanding can heal the struggles and conflicts that are causing problems and distress.
My focus
I work with adults across the lifespan who are having difficulty with anxiety, adjustments to life changes, grief and loss, relationship problems, past and/or present trauma and so forth.
My communication style
Previous feedback I have received from clients is that I have a calming and authentic presence that allows them to trust themselves to do the work. I believe it's important to lead and collaborate by example, and humor often finds its way into our sessions.
My journey to mental healthcare
I have a rich background in a variety of service-oriented careers, which have culminated into and informs my work as a therapist. Those include residential treatment, housing, guardianship and aging, teaching yoga and I am a former first responder. As a therapist it is a great honor to hold space for clients to do the hardest thing that can be asked of us human beings, which is confront the ways in which we have been wounded and take action to heal and change.
My goals for you
Life throws many obstacles onto our paths, and these are often opportunities for healing old wounds, improving relationships, living your purpose, increasing health and wellbeing, or even more exciting, something yet unknown. So, goal setting often evolves from short-term goals to alleviate immediate stressors and distress, into longer term goals as the client becomes more in tune with a vision for themselves.
My first session with you
There is not a set structure to the first session. The intake is an information gathering session for myself and the client. It's also an opportunity to see if it feels comfortable and like a good fit. As well as to acknowledge the clients' immediate concerns and start mapping out a plan forward.
