I am Sharon Sonko, LCSW-C and I have been a Clinical Social Worker and a State of Maryland Social Work Supervisor for over 10 years. I began my practice while working in Child Welfare with Maryland's state government and later elevated to the federal government with Veterans Affairs. When I am not offering therapy to clients, I spend my free time outdoors enjoying walking meditations along some of Maryland's historical trails.
My approach
The main approach to therapy used is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy as it focuses on changing your thoughts, feelings and behaviors using active client participation and positivity. Various ways to achieve this includes using coping skills, techniques and homework, etc., to facilitate change. Other approaches used will be Supportive Therapy and Mindfulness Meditations with a focus on the present.
My focus
I enjoy working with adult from various backgrounds that are struggling with issues that include but are not limited to Anxiety, Depression, Trauma/PTSD, and Relationship challenges. The clients that have done well in my practice have often experienced past trauma and want to positively focus on changing their thoughts and feelings so they can their behavior in order to obtain relief.
My communication style
My communication style is warm and relaxed but interactive with a focus on providing clients with an engaging environment. It is important that clients are comfortable so they fully engage as they grow to become their best self focusing on their present situation.
My journey to mental healthcare
My desire to help others who struggle with mental health issues become the best version of themselves is my reason for embarking on my journey to being a Therapist. It is a pleasure to see clients achieve positive results despite challenges they may face.
My goals for you
My approach to goal setting is to keenly focused on collaborating with clients to find solutions to their problems. Goals are an effective way to focus on the client's needs as a path to achieving desired outcomes is created. Typically, goals are created during an initial session as they are used to measure client progress.
My first session with you
Our first session together will be an intake session where we will have a chance to get to know each other. It is an introduction to discuss and formulate a treatment plan for further work as well as address any concerns about the therapeutic process. The modality, goals and recommended number of sessions will also be determined at intake.
