My name is Lisa Holahan and I am a licensed clinical mental health counselor. I like to take an integrated approach to therapy in that I pull from different theories to help clients enrich their understanding of their own functioning. Empowering clients with knowledge of why they may be utilizing maladaptive coping strategies and introducing them to new ways of coping can help them to make impactful changes in their lives.
My approach
I utilize psychodynamic, attachment-based and EMDR therapy to inform my approach to helping clients with their problems.
My focus
I typically work with adults (18+) who struggle with anxiety, depression, trauma, life transitions, relationship issues and maladaptive communication styles.
My communication style
I strive to create a warm and non-judgmental environment for my clients. My current clients would describe me as down-to-earth and practical. I also enjoy inserting a little levity into the session space when appropriate--sometimes it's good to laugh at ourselves!
My journey to mental healthcare
I became a therapist because I have always been fascinated with human behavior. As I began to learn more about how our pasts and upbringing affects how we view and navigate the world, I found immense satisfaction in being able to implement changes in my own behavior patterns to improve my life. I enjoy passing on what I've learned to my clients and I get a thrill when they tell me that they made a change in themselves that impacted their lives in a positive or profound way.
My goals for you
I utilize a holistic approach to mental health which means I like to incorporate skills to take care of your physical health. I offer my client's ideas to improve their functioning, reduce stress/anxiety and reduce negative cognitions. When appropriate, I will offer a variety of tips for clients to implement into their everyday lives and follow-up with them during their next session to see if they have incorporated any skills into their lives.
My first session with you
During your first session, I typically like to take a background history and begin to build rapport with you by asking you about things you'd like to change in your life, where you would like to see some improvements and get a feel for how I might approach helping you to accomplish what you came to therapy for in the first place.
