Hi there, I'm Daniel!

My name is Daniel Quinn, LICSW and I have been a psychotherapist for more than 35 years. I provide both individual and couples therapy. I use evidence-based methods to work with my clients on achieving their desired goals.

My approach

In couples therapy, I find the Gottman Method and family-of-origin approaches to be very effective. For issues around sexuality in a relationship, I find the Sensate Focus method to be very helpful. In individual therapy, I use the appropriate method to match the struggles and goals of each client. These approaches include Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Trauma Informed Therapy, Mindfulness, Meditation, Psychodynamic Psychotherapy, 12-Step Facilitated Therapy, and Motivational Enhancement Therapy.

My focus

With couples, I commonly see people wanting assistance with conflict resolution skills, communication skills, and help with diminished physical intimacy. For individuals, I have found that past histories of trauma or emotional invalidation are fairly common regardless of the particular struggle bringing someone to see me. With that said, I see people struggling with depression, anxiety, unresolved childhood or adult trauma, grief, mood swings, problematic substance use, relationship problems, and sexual dysfunction problems.

My communication style

I listen. I am patient. Clients say they feel “seen” and “heard” with me. It is especially important for me to be empathetic and respectful. Clients feel safe bringing their concerns to me but also in surveys rate me as effectively helping them. They feel supported by my expertise and in-session approach.

My journey to mental healthcare

As a young man, I saw the impacts of emotional and psychological struggles on people and the adverse impacts it had on their lives. In the early years of my career, I pursued interests in both the research and humanistic sides of the psychology field. After several years, I knew that I wanted to pursue a lifelong career in the humanistic/clinical side of the field. I saw how people can change, grow, and overcome. I have always been inspired by my client's determination, even courage, to confront their struggles and move beyond them. Sometimes I am asked how I can personally manage to do this work for so many years. For me, this work is energizing and inspiring. It is not a chore, it is a privilege.

My goals for you

My approach is client-centered. The client determines their goals, not me. Quite simply, at the outset, I ask the client what they want for their goals. This question may be revisited from time to time. My job is to assist the client in achieving their desired goals.

My first session with you

The first session is an assessment to start understanding the client’s struggles and goals. I always start the session by asking the client if there is anything that they want to know about me in my professional capacity. From there I ask the client about what is bringing them to see me, their desired goals, and the pertinent history related to those things. I finish the first session by giving the client my impressions of what they have shared and my ideas of the specific therapeutic approaches that would be most helpful for their situation.
