I am Norma Clark, a Licensed Professional Counselor in Texas and in Louisiana with over 13 years of experience with adults in individual and group therapy, primarily in crisis and trauma, including 3 years in online video sessions. I use creative interventions, such as art, music, animal-assisted, Tai Chi, yoga, mindfulness, writing, and life narrative. Also, I emphasize understanding and processing emotions.
My approach
My primary goal is to help clients identify, manage, and work through any emotional or behavioral problems that impede their quality of life. I utilize Client-Centered Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Motivational Interviewing, Narrative Therapy, Trauma-Focused Therapy.
My focus
Most of my experience is in crisis and trauma, but I have treated depression, anxiety, bipolar, PTSD, psychosis, substance abuse and dual diagnosis. Most of my clients have been adults, but, in addition, I have experience working with families, couples, parents, children, and chronically suicidal teens. I am most comfortable treating adults with anxiety and PTSD.
My communication style
My role as a therapist is not to judge, but rather to listen and provide support while my clients work to face problems head-on. I will guide them to navigate to the root cause of their personal crisis, while learning valuable coping skills that will help them stabilize their mood and behaviors. I create an environment promoting self-acceptance and awareness.
My journey to mental healthcare
I started out as a teacher, but soon found that was not my calling. It was after a series of life events that I knew for sure my purpose. I love working with people and seeing them transform their lives and reach their destiny . . . find purpose and meaning. When I see an addiction overcome, a weight loss gained, or a relationship restored, I feel a deep satisfaction that nothing else can match.
My goals for you
I utilize a worksheet in which the clients brainstorm ideas regarding problems and issues. They decide on three goals, then visualize what it will be like when those goals are reached. I write clinical goals based on the clients worksheet. It's the visualization that is most powerful and sets in motion the achievement of their goals.
My first session with you
I explain my process, so the client is prepared. I conduct a comprehensive intake, which includes a simple statement regarding what they hope to gain from therapy and a list of strengths and weaknesses. I make a list of first names and ages of client's significant others, including pets. I have the clients do 3 drawings and let them interpret the drawings aided by pertinent socratic questioning.
