Hello! My name is Kendal Martin and I am a LCSW: Licensed Clinical Social Worker. I like to approach therapy from a "meet-them-where-they-are" mentality. If a client comes to a session and is struggling with something different than their initial struggle, I am going to work with them to address and process the new struggle. I have worked with children and adults and love working with both generations.
My approach
I like to use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Narrative Therapy, EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing), and am open to other approaches as well.
My focus
I have worked with both adults and children. I like working with both generations! I am most comfortable working with anxiety, depression, and trauma.
My communication style
I feel it is very important to have a calm, but assertive, tone with clients. I have been told that I have a calm ambiance in my offices and am easy to talk to. I want the client to feel comfortable enough to open up to work through and process their struggles and if the office and therapist don't offer those calming things, the client is less likely to open up.
My journey to mental healthcare
I always thought I wanted to be a nurse. However, after trying it out as a CNA, I realized it was not for me, but knew I still wanted to help people. I looked into the social work program at Murray State University and enrolled. While being a wife and Mom to 3 girls, I started my journey to becoming a social worker. I then had my 4th child, 2 weeks before COVID struck our country and was still enrolled in school. I graduated that December with my Bachelors in Social Work, then went on to complete my Masters in Social Work from Campbellsville University. I sat for my Certified Social Work exam in 2022 and my Licensed Clinical Social Work exam in May of 2024. I love being a therapist because I can help people in areas of their life that they find struggle, heartache, and trauma, and help them turn that into a positive life-lesson event.
My goals for you
I like to hit the ground running with goal setting at the first session so we have an idea of what we will continue to work on during future sessions. I approach setting these goals from a person-centered aspect. I will often guide client's if they struggle to put into words what they would like their goal(s) to be.
My first session with you
Clients should expect a brief introduction into who I am as a therapist, giving a brief description of their history, and setting their goals and objectives for their treatment plans.
