My name is Steven Alexander, PhD. I am a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC) with over 35 years of clinical experience. My practice focuses on mental health disorders, personality disorders, addictions, and relationship problems.
My approach
Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is the most effective therapeutic approach for most clients; occasionally, a more behavioral-focused theory or an eclectic modality is most beneficial.
My focus
My clientele base covers a wide range of issues. Recently, the majority of my clients have fallen into one or more of three categories: martial/partner disorders, mood disorders, and addiction issues. Anxiety and depressive disorders for years have been steadily increasing, either as a primary or secondary problem. Addiction includes porn, sex, and gambling disorders.
My communication style
My clients tell me I am a great listener and empathize with their needs. I'm not a judge but rather a working partner who can assist you with any issues you may have. Building trust and comfort is essential to identifying and communicating things that may be difficult to address. Difficult paths are too often part of life, but if you work with me, we will find better days ahead.
My journey to mental healthcare
As a Christian with an intense interest in psychology, I have always been motivated to help others with emotional stress. I view my faith and commitment to helping others as an asset to my therapy approach. Many of my clients are of other religious or non-religious backgrounds; where individuals choose to place their faith is a choice, and I respect that.
My goals for you
Your goal or outcome of therapy is one of the most significant parts of counseling. If you have a set goal, that is also my goal. If not, we will work together to define an outcome that meets your needs.
My first session with you
How I address the first session depends on the person's personality. Some clients wish to jump in and discuss their reason for seeking therapy, while others can be more reserved and cautious about discussing personal matters. In all cases, building a positive working relationship that will enhance the therapy experience is essential.
