My name is Sanford Pederson, I hold a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology and am licensed in Indiana as a Psychologist with a Health Service Provider in Psychology Endorsement. I've been doing psychotherapy for several decades. My approach to therapy varies from client to client. I have experience in most orientations to therapy, and tailor both my theoretical orientation and technique according to what the client wants to be different in their life. I follow where you go.
My approach
My therapeutic approach is client-centered. For me, that means I use whatever combination of theoretical approaches to therapy I think will be the most useful in providing the client with the tools to make the changes in their life that they want to see.
My focus
I work with a diverse group of men and women aged 18 and up. All gender identities and cultural identities are welcome. I am experienced and comfortable with anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, personality issues, cognitive difficulties, and substance abuse.
My communication style
I prefer to create a safe and welcoming environment where the client feels safe to express whatever ideas and emotions they wish to. Where they feel free to be exactly who they are without pretense.
My journey to mental healthcare
I started in college working on the campus Helpline. I discovered that I had some aptitude for the work and enjoyed it. I then changed my undergraduate major to psychology and continued to earn my Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology.
My goals for you
I typically ask the client within the first one or two sessions what their goals for therapy are. These are always subject to change by the client.
My first session with you
The initial session is a mutual interview, where I learn about you as a person and you learn about me as a therapist. I will typically ask if you already have goals for therapy. If you haven't, that's not a problem. It's simply an issue for us to explore what changes you would like to make in your life.
