Hello, I'm Cathleen Rodriguez LPC-5955. Counseling is the unique journey of one person’s self-discovery, acceptance, forgiveness and act of letting go in order to obtain the potential they desire (which already resides within them) through the utilization of skills and tools taught to them by the counselor. The counselor is the facilitator of change and health improvement. Counseling involves the whole person, not just one aspect of who they are, have been or will be in the future. One must consider the environment, biology, perception, experience and emotion of an individual to truly comprehend the complexity of that individual. Counseling is a multi-faceted understanding of the human experience.
My approach
Therapy is a collaborative process through which the counselor brings in therapeutic tools and supports to assist the client in their focus and goals. I have used approaches including CBT, DBT, Narrative, Strength based, Solution and Client centered. I offer a more eclectic approach where the client's needs guide which tools are utilized and each therapeutic experience is unique.
My focus
I have been blessed to work in this field for over nine years. I have worked with diverse populations including but not limited to individuals who have experienced trauma and abuse, Veterans, individuals with Autism and Bi Polar disorders, individuals who struggle with depression, Post Traumatic Stress and anxiety and individuals of a variety of ages. Each journey is unique.
My communication style
The environment of counseling is first a safe place where the client will feel heard and validated, therefore rapport is the first order of the day. If a client does not feel comfortable and safe, the experience will not be effective so I focus primarily on making my clients feel this safety within sessions.
My journey to mental healthcare
Prior to being a therapist I was a school teacher. I transitioned to counseling when my health prevented me from returning to the schools. I have always had a passion for helping people and have truly enjoyed my job since I started in 2015.
My goals for you
To start off, goals are established with the client to help guide the counseling experience, so during the first session the client will be asked to identify one or two goals they have for counseling and these goals will be monitored for progress and continued relevance throughout the course of therapy.
My first session with you
The first session is the most difficult at times due to the nature of assessment. During the first session, the client can expect to discuss many topics regarding their lives and experiences as well as health and family history. It is this initial session where the client will establish their goals and expectations for therapy. It can be difficult when having to disclose information that is sensitive in nature, but it is a necessary step in developing the most comprehensive treatment for the client.
