My name is Dr. Megumi Maruya Makepeace. I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor and hold a doctorate in Clinical Psychology. I was raised on Oahu in a very traditional Japanese family, spent many years as a military spouse/dependent on the Mainland, which brings these experiences to my multicultural approach to therapy. I am aware of the cultural makeup of Hawai'i, and the unique and diverse cultures of the local population as well as those new to the island. I have a passion to treat culturally diverse and underserved populations. This provider resides in Hawaii.
My approach
I work from an integrative, holistic, and multicultural perspective and combine humanistic approaches with Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy and other evidence-based treatments.
My focus
I provide therapy to adolescents and adults and am trained to provide individual and couple's treatment. I have extensive experience in treating anxiety, trauma, depression, fertility concerns, postpartum anxiety and depression, adjustment challenges, anger, family and relationship conflict, life stressors, substance abuse issues, stage of life transition, and grief and loss.
My communication style
I maintain a compassionate approach that is non-judgmental, and empathic. I strive to work collaboratively with my clients to tailor treatment to their unique journey of development and personal growth.
My journey to mental healthcare

I am passionate about guiding people in developing new insights and experience in order to better navigate difficult times of your life. I want to hear your story and assist you to find within yourself the ability to overcome whatever challenges you are facing. My life experiences have given me a unique perspective to understand and empathize in a powerful way.
