Aloha! My name is Dawn Martin and I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor and Certified Substance Abuse Counselor here in Hawai'i. I work mostly with those needing support around trauma, depression, anxiety, relationship stress, and life stage transition. I would define my therapy approach to be a client-centered holistic approach, incorporating psychedelic-assisted healing and integration as a tool for transformation.
My approach
My theory of counseling is an integrative approach. There are various ways of implementing diverse theories and techniques from which people can benefit from. I focus on the delivery of therapy in creative ways. The basis of my counseling theory is a combination of cognitive behavioral therapy, trauma-informed care, dialectic behavior of mindfulness, somatic work, and a family systems approach. I most often will incorporate internal family systems and positive psychology in most sessions.
My focus
I work mostly with adults, both individually and as couples, who are interested in self-discovery, shifting thought patterns, and/or searching for different ways to heal. I have extensive training in treating addictions, depression, suicidality, and generational trauma.
My communication style
My communication style is authentic, trustworthy, and personable. I feel that it is important to be transparent in building rapport within a therapeutic relationship.
My journey to mental healthcare
I decided to become a therapist because I thrive on finding creative ways to connect with people. There is no better way to lift another human up than seeing one grow through what they see as impossible and begin to positively impact those around them. I look forward to supporting people through challenges and embarking on a new journey toward self-healing.
My goals for you
The art of effective counseling not only addresses the identified needs of the person, but also the co-existing issues related to family, relationships, employment, education, spirituality, physical health, and mental health. I believe that goal setting allows us to start a conversation about where you have been, where you currently are, and where you would like to be. Goal setting allows us to see what is working for you and what areas still need improvement.
My first session with you
The first session is all about building rapport and allowing you space to express what has been causing you distress. I like to explore therapies that have worked in the past, answer questions you may have about the therapeutic process, and most importantly actively listen to your concerns and goals.
