Aloha, My name is Mary Duke. I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (MHC) based in Hawaii, working with clients statewide via telehealth. I work with adults who are experiencing anxiety, depression, and stress related to work/life transitions, and relationships. I utilize Cognitive Behavior therapy and Solution Focused Therapy to help my clients live a more fulfilling life.
My approach
My approach to therapy depends on the needs of my clients. I utilize a Humanistic, strength-based, collaborative approach. I utilize Cognitive Behavior Therapy because it aims to teach people that it is possible to have control over your thoughts and feelings. Together, we will discuss what is most important to you during our counseling sessions and establish goals.
My focus
Mostly, I have been working with adults, mid-twenties and above who are experiencing anxiety, depression, and stress related to work/ life transitions, relationships, and grief. For the past 12 years, I have provided counseling support to Active-Duty Military Service Members in Hawaii, Texas, and overseas.
My communication style
My communication style is open and welcoming, I am easy to talk to and a good listener. My goal is to establish a strong sense of rapport, trust, and safety. I want my clients to feel heard and understood. I enjoy knowing that I can use my empathy and compassion to offer support in challenging times.
My journey to mental healthcare
I decided to become a therapist while working in an early intervention program as a case manager. I was part of an early intervention team of Licensed therapists, social workers, and Psychologists who were working with Zero-to-Three special needs population. I was responsible for the intakes and realized that I had a natural ability to connect and help others. The early intervention program helped me realize that I was a part of something that made a very positive impact on the children and families we supported. I decided then, I wanted to become a therapist. Today, I continue to have a strong desire to connect and help people. I value growth, lifelong learning, and strive to stay up to date on new training, and research in the Mental Health field.
My goals for you
My approach to goal setting is collaborative. Together, we will identify and clarify what you want to accomplish during our time together. During the first initial sessions, we will work together to establish your specific goals and monitor your progress.
My first session with you
Our first session is all about establishing a connection. We will talk about how you have been feeling lately and what your expectations are for our time together. It is very important that you feel safe and unjudged so that you will feel free to share your story and the reason for seeking out support.
