Aloha, my name is Kit Hill and I am a licensed mental health counselor in Hawai’i. I work mostly online via telehealth. I work with older adolescents and adults who are looking for help with anger management, anxiety, and addressing their trauma. My focus is on empowering you and helping trauma survivors regain their sense of worth. I am experienced in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), and Acceptance commitment Therapy (ACT).
My approach
My approach to therapy focuses on “unconditional positive regard”, this means that I believe that you can be successful. I use active listening, modeling, and awareness techniques to help you become aware of what isn’t working for you (that is if you do not already know, and sometimes we don’t). I teach breathing techniques, I encourage the use of coping devices, and mindfulness-based stress reduction techniques. I strive to empower and reinforce positive, helpful behavior.
My focus
I used to work in a prison helping men find ways to break down societal barriers, identify their emotions, and learn to positively interact with others. I also help people to improve how they feel, identify and manage their anger, and find appropriate ways of communicating. I help people find ways to improve their mental health, focus on reducing anxiety, and address anger in a pro-social manner; it’s okay to be angry, it’s what you do with that anger.
My communication style
I strive to create a safe environment where you can believe in yourself and be open to exploring as well as learning new skills. I’ve been told that I am like a teacher, coach, and cheerleader all in one. Past clients have told me that I am compassionate, optimistic, and even funny (laughter can be a wonderful de-stressor relaxing the body). Others have told me that they see me as a friend who listens, and makes them feel worthy.
My journey to mental healthcare
I took a “helpful talk” elective when I was younger, I was nervous about my lisp (speech impediment) and I had hoped that I could overcome the nervousness. I wanted to help myself, and then I realized I wanted to help others. I wanted to offer a sanctuary for others to be heard, just as someone offered a place for me to be heard. I continue to work as a helper so that others can be heard, be successful, and thrive in their environment.
My goals for you
You come to the sessions with expert knowledge of your life, and I come armed with professional training and experience. Together we design an action plan with achievable goals and effective strategies. This takes time and trust in my expertise, as well as trust in your ability to change your life. I look forward to working with you.
My first session with you
I think of myself as a helper. I strive to create a safe space where you feel empowered, relaxed, and open to finding solutions that may help you. I often start a session by asking what emotion are you experiencing (even if it is nervousness, these are your feelings) and possibly a stress rating. I encourage feedback at the end of session: what did you like about the session, what didn’t you like, and offer ways to help improve the next time we meet.
