Hi! My name is Jennifer Hester and I'm a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW) based in Athens, Georgia. My approach is rooted in integrity, collaboration, and meeting individuals where they are with openness and support.
My approach
I work through a narrative and interpersonal lens and incorporate other approaches that will help clients successfully meet their goal(s). This can include Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Psychodynamic concepts.
My focus
I enjoy working with a range of clients from 18 y/o - early 40s. I am an LGBTQ+ ally and value multiculturalism. My areas of expertise include relationship distress, life transitions, trauma, grief, mood disorders, and family dynamics.
My communication style
I am very down-to-earth, grounded, and calm. This is your space and you are invited to use whatever words and language that aligns best with your process. Once we have a secure therapeutic rapport, I often incorporate some direct communication to help challenge and motivate perspective.
My journey to mental healthcare
While I was pursuing my bachelor's in Psychology and Family Studies, I met with my advisor to explore graduate programs. I originally planned to become a psychologist. However, after speaking with my advisor and sharing my values and aspirations, he introduced me to social work. My values as a social worker very much align with my personal values, and I couldn't see myself being anything else. I feel honored to have been able to work with so many different populations, cultures, and settings. I am driven by the passion for serving individuals and helping them heal and recognize their worth.
My goals for you
I view you as leading this journey and I'm helping you navigate it in hopes of you getting to your desired destination. I am extremely collaborative and will periodically check in on your therapy goals as I believe they serve as the anchor of our work together.
My first session with you
I am very personable while also very committed to helping you. During the first session, my goal is to promote safety and comfort and to best understand your goal(s). I value a comprehensive assessment which means I may ask a variety of questions as this helps me understand the "whole" person.
