My name is Daryl Gessner and I am a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) located in Cartersville, George. I work with clients face-to-face and throughout the state via telehealth. Many of my clients consist of adults, adolescents, and children, and I specialize in anxiety, depression, and anger management with individuals. Additionally, I also work extensively with couples counseling involving communication, infidelity, porn and other addictions, and relationship issues. I assist families with issues such as blended families, adoption, parenting, and relationship issues with young adults. In addition, I conduct testing for ADD, ADHD, and Autism.
My approach
My approach to therapy is based on a foundation and training in Cognitive/Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Adlerian Therapy, and Solution-Focused Therapy. This varied background allows me to work with my clients to build a strong rapport and trust so that we can together explore the issues and concerns that are affecting them.
My focus
My focus is multilevel, depending on the needs of the client(s). I work with individuals who are experiencing grief, anxiety, depression, or anger management. I assist couples with navigating the issues of communication, relationship issues, and various addictions. My work with families involves parenting concerns, especially special needs children. It also involves blended families and adoption.
My communication style
My communication style is interactive. My client and I will have a conversation that I direct, but the client does not feel like it's an interrogation. I step back to allow the client to express their thoughts and feelings, but I ask questions to verify that I am understanding their perspective.
My journey to mental healthcare
Early in my life, I worked a variety of jobs from managing a Starbucks to managing a bank. It was when I became a therapist that I found my place in the world. Being a therapist allows me to make a difference in others' lives, even if only for a moment. I believe that being a therapist allows me to be a tool for God to reach out and bring peace to his children.
My goals for you
My approach to goal-setting with clients is all about working together to define what you want to accomplish in our time together. This often starts by building trust between us and getting comfortable with what it means to be in therapy. Over time, we'll work together to set goals and track your progress.
My first session with you
What you can expect from the first session is leaving with a feeling of being heard. During the initial session, we will spend most of the time discussing how you are feeling and what the circumstances are around your unique situation. During this time, I will ask occasional questions to either prompt or clarify my understanding of your situation. Part of the first session is not only to explain your feelings, but it's also provides an opportunity for you to decide if you like working with my particular style of therapy. If you do, we can continue moving forward. If not, let me know and I can refer you to someone who might be a better fit for what you are looking for.
