James Brook, LCSW, LICSW, LCADC, CAADC, CCATP, CTMH. I specialize in Anxiety, Insomnia, Addiction, Self-esteem, and Veterans' issues (not including PTSD). I have been practicing since 2008 in multiple settings, including residential, correctional, and outpatient. I am a Disabled Veteran and in recovery from substance use. I am a past user of mental and behavioral health services and am personally aware of the stigma associated with asking for help. Asking for help takes an extraordinary strength and desire to be your best self.
My approach
My philosophy regarding counseling/therapy is that it is not magic. A secret word or a snap of the fingers does not solve our issues. Therapy is two people talking about life’s difficulties and finding ways to lessen their impact on your life. It takes hard work to make changes in our lives. My approach to therapy is eclectic. I most often use CBT, Strength-Based, Client-Focused, and Solution-Focused therapies to help clients address the issues they have identified as being problematic for them.
My focus
I typically work with clients who are experiencing difficulties that interfere with their ability to live as full a life as they want. The most common mental health issues I work with clients on are anxiety, addiction & recovery, insomnia, self-esteem, and veteran-related issues that are not related to PTSD. Services are currently only provided through video and/or audio at this time.
My communication style
Former clients have said my approach is encouraging and inspirational and even when things don’t work out as fast as they would like, they leave each session with a lot of encouragement to keep trying.
My journey to mental healthcare
I am a Disabled Veteran and in recovery from alcohol and cocaine abuse. I have been in recovery for over 18 years following 30 years of addiction, homelessness, and unaddressed mental health issues. I am also a past user of mental and behavioral health services and am personally aware of the stigma associated with asking for help. I fully understand asking for help takes an extraordinary strength and desire to be your best self. It is these past difficulties and successes that led to me becoming a therapist.
My goals for you
I believe my role is to help clients identify what it is they want to work on in therapy and how they want to do it. Therapy is for the client and they are in charge of what their goals are. I offer assistance in the goal-setting process.
My first session with you
During the first session, we will complete an assessment to help me better understand the client and their needs/wants/goals. We will also complete a treatment plan that will identify the client's goals and how we will address those goals.
